The Oculus Rift is an upcoming virtual reality head-mounted display. It is being developed by Oculus VR, who have raised $16 million, of which $2.4 million was raised with crowdfunding via Kickstarter. The company was founded by Palmer Luckey and the co-founders of Scaleform ,and id Software cofounder John Carmack was later hired as its Chief Technology Officer. Developer kits are in the process of being shipped out.
Here some video to know more about Oculus Rift :
Oculus CEO Brandon Iribe recently spoke to Edge Online about getting the device to market. By all accounts, the Oculus does indeed deliver something of an impressive VR experience, enough to secure an addition $16 million in funding outside of its original Kickstarter which raised $2.4M. Iribe talked about the price they’re shooting for when the device is finally released to the public.
“The lower the price point, the wider the audience,” he said. “We have all kinds of fantasy ideas. We’d love it to be free one day, so how do we get it as close to free as possible? Obviously it won’t be that in the beginning. We’re targeting the $300 price point right now but there’s the potential that it could get much less expensive with a few different relationships and strategies.”
$300 seems like a reasonable goal for the price of the device, and one that I believe many would pay for the best publicly consumable virtual reality experience in existence. Free, on the other hand? That’s a more lofty proposition, even with the “subsides” that Iribe mentions. He doesn’t detail exactly what sort of relationships he thinks he can forge that would lower the price that drastically, but it doesn’t hurt to try, I suppose.
**Also, there's been a scoop from EuroGamer that Sony had started to step into the VR arena, as there's been a significant development on a PS4 VR headset. Oculus CEO, Palmer Luckey has previously claimed to welcome the competition from the likes of Microsoft and Sony as it would "validate the market".
